Rock Art in Sápmi

The Museum’s permanent exhibition entitled Rock Art in Sápmi allows you to come right up close with the millennia-old tradition of rock art. Photos, film and images give you an insight into the representational world of Stone Age man. What was it he wanted to say, and to whom? You can also compare the rock art images with symbols on Sami ceremonial drums and archaeological objects. Although there are more than 1,000 years that separate several of these images, they are strikingly alike.

The exhibition has been produced within the framework of the Museum’s large-scale collaboration project Rock Art in Sápmi, its funding owing in part to Umeå’s status as a European Capital of Culture for 2014.
