The northern parts of Västerbotten have been characterised by mining for the last 75 years. The discovery of the find in Boliden was the starting shot of the mining era. It turned out to be one of the richest gold mines in the world and gold is still being mined in several places in the area.
Boliden Mining Museum is housed in the old office, which was the first building that was constructed in the new mining community of Boliden. The mining and mineral museum tells the story of mining in the area and of the history of the earth. Or is it a time machine? Follow the 92 metre long tape measure and travel from the origin of the world to the pioneering years of the Boliden mining community.
You will learn how new minerals are formed, but also how man has utilised natural resources throughout time. What does an earthquake feel like? What is it like to work below ground? What are fluorescent minerals? Boliden Mining Museum will answer all your questions, with the help of slide shows and guided tours. Try your luck panning for gold in the cellar before rounding off the visit with refreshments in the café.
