Cyklar i staden

Den första cykeln konstruerades på 1860-talet och kallas velociped. Nu, på 1880-talet, har det kommit en ny modell som kallas ”säkerhetsvelocipeden”. Den har kedjeutväxling och luftfyllda däck. Den är mycket lättare och säkrare att cykla på. Men cyklar är väldigt dyra och kostar ungefär en halv årslön för en arbetare. Det är främst stadens borgarklass som har råd att skaffa det nya fordonet.

I början av 1900-talet blev cykeln billigare och tillgänglig för alla. Den blev särskilt viktig för ungdomar på landsbygden för att lättare ta sig utanför sin egen by.

Bicycles in town

The first bicycle from the 1860s was called a velocipede. Now, in the 1880s, a new model called the “safety velocipede” appears on the streets. It has a geared chain and pneumatic tires. It is much easier and safer to ride. But bicycles are very expensive, costing about half a year’s salary for a worker. For the most part, only the town’s bourgeoisie can afford to buy this new vehicle.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the bicycle became cheaper and accessible to everyone. It became especially important for young people in rural areas, allowing them to travel outside their own village more easily.
