Tegsstugan Cottage

Poverty was widespread in Sweden in the 19th century. Many of Västerbotten’s parishes had primitive homes or cottages for the poor. The 1918 Poverty Relief Act abolished these and replaced them with elderly care homes where municipalities offered help to needy elderly.

Gammlia’s cottage for the poor was in Västerteg in Umeå. The cottage was given to the museum in 1936 by the Poor Relief Board of Umeå Rural Parish.
