This year of residency at the Sune Jonsson Centre for Documentary Photography has been awarded to Salad Hilowle. In the autumn of 2019, he will work with the Suedi-Morian project in which he investigates the African diaspora in Sweden, among other things using photographic archival material at the Museum of Västerbotten as a starting point.
The jury’s explanatory statement notes:
Hilowle’s artistic practice moves among contemporary documentation, video art, photography, sculpture and screen printing, which challenges prevailing notions of what documentary photography can be. Through his work during the residency in Västerbotten, his practice can also contribute with new impulses and networks in the region, both artistic and social.
Salad Hilowle was born in 1986 and received a bachelor’s degree from University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. He lives in Stockholm, grew up in Gävle and has the roots in Somalia.
